I love to hear from readers! Here are some frequently asked questions and answers. How did your Appalachian Mystery Series come about? Appalachian Adventures started with romance, then turned to murder. The original concept was 4 books, 4 male cousins, 4 seasons and 4 different sports. I had to get the romance out of my system. "Appalachian Paradise" is romance and backpacking. "Emeralds in the Snow" is romance, downhill skiing and a cold case mystery. "Murder at Blue Falls," my third novel (3rd male cousin, 3rd season and 3rd sport - horseback riding) changed everything. My publisher, Ingalls Publishing Group, fell in love with the two main characters and the following books are based on the fictional Blue Falls Guest Ranch in the real Triplett Valley outside the real cozy mountain town of Boone, NC.
How did you get started writing? One year I asked a woman who worked in the office if she had anything for me to read on my vacation to a dude ranch. She gave me a Kay Hooper contemporary romance. That year, I read 400 romances. Then I decided that I could write one. I joined RWA and attended meetings and the national conference. They do an excellent job of training in the craft of writing.
What makes this novel different from others in your genre?
One unique aspect of my novels is that some of the minor characters are real people. I have permission to use their names and photographs. Yes, there are pictures in the novels. Also, many of the settings are real such as the waterfall and cave in Triplett Valley which exist where I live.
Maggie Bishop is the author of a mystery series, Appalachian Adventure Mysteries, and two romance novels set in the Mountains of North Carolina in the Boone area. In PERFECT FOR FRAMING, trouble's a-brewing in the Property Owners Association where greed and a lust for power lead to murder in a clash of personal versus public needs. Now: The photography group meets at Blue Falls Guest Ranch and soon there is ONE SHOT TOO MANY which features Detective Tucker with yesterday's regret haunts, leading to today's deadly fix. In the Appalachian Adventure Romance series, Award winning APPALACHIAN PARADISE takes place on a five-day backpacking trip in the spring amongst the bears, boars and girl scouts. With this book, you can take the hike without physically taking the hike. EMERALDS IN THE SNOW involves downhill skiing at Sugar Mountain, an emerald mine, and a cold case mystery.
