Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Prophet is the best book ever written about Abraham Lincoln s religious views. The culmination of Wayne C. Temple s long and distinguished career as a passionate researcher and prolific writer, this fascinating book is based on total mastery of the sources on Abraham Lincoln, and it will offer revelations even to those who have studied Lincoln for years. It also offers a fair-minded and judicious interpretation, showing that Lincoln was never technically a Christian but proving beyond question that he was one of the most deeply religious men ever to occupy the White House. This is a book that is going to stand the test of time. Every serious student of Abraham Lincoln should read it. --David Herbert Donald the late Charles Warren Professor of American History Harvard University
Wayne C. Temple again demonstrates why he remains the Dean of Lincoln scholars by writing a sweeping study of Lincoln s religious heritage, and tracing his spiritual pilgrimage to find God. Born into a devout Baptist family, married by an Episcopalian clergyman, and frequently attending worship service at Presbyterian churches in Springfield and Washington, Lincoln s personal theology was an unusual blend of backwoods superstition, Calvinist fatalism, and a strong reliance on Biblical doctrine. From the lively pen of this talented researcher and writer, young Lincoln is shown grappling with the concept of an over-ruling Providence, overcoming personal tragedies, and emerging as Father Abraham, the President who discovered God s purpose for his own life and the nation he loved. Temple effectively brushes away the myriad of biased and erroneous hypotheses that historians and theologians alike have previously proposed to explain Lincoln s faith, and presents a clear and cohesive picture of the man s religious thought and practices. Heavily relying on Abraham Lincoln s own words and fusing them with what he has uncovered in innumerable known and recently discovered sources, this respected historian gives us the most of what can be known about Lincoln s religion and that of his family. Abraham Lincoln: from Skeptic to Prophet is the most complete and reliable treatment about the subject to date, and convincingly illustrates how America s greatest President came to be one of the nation s greatest spiritual leaders. A splendid portrait of this great and good man! --Steven K. Rogstad, Lincoln author and member of the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin
Unlike Most Writers on Lincoln, who merely recycle the work of their predecessors, Wayne Temple has for many years been digging patiently and deeply in unfamiliar sources. In this volume he presents much fresh information about the Sixteenth President and challenges some traditional interpretations. His unsentimental analysis of Mary Todd Lincoln, especially the peculiar circumstances surrounding her wedding, will raise many eyebrows. --Michael Burlingame, Naomi B. Lynn, Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies, University of Illinois - Springfield
