"In almost every generation of preachers, a few voices rise to the level of representing the best of that generation. Robert Lee Hill is such a voice. Organized around the motifs of Main Street Proclamations, Ash Wednesday Proclamations and Christmas Proclamations, Hill listens sensitively to the Bible and theology for insight into personsal situations, congregational issues and political developments. Preachers will want this volume for its homiletical energy. Laity will want it for inspiration and guidance. --Dr. Ron Allen, Nettie Sweeney and Hugh Th. Miller Professor of Preaching and New Testament, Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana
Robert Lee Hill has the mind of a keen and astoundingly well-read theologian, the perspective of a poet and the heart of a pastor. The genius--the soaring, illuminating, convicting genius--of this collection is that he masterfully combines each trait: keeping us away from insipid theology, halting us in our sometimes weary tracks with the sheer beauty of a just-perfect phrase, and showing such love for those whom he pastors that even difficult subjects are made "hearable." Hill's conviction--deftly demonstrated on every page--is that there is no better venue for thinking about the tough things of life and faith than in a gathered Christian community which takes The Word seriously. --Rev. Chuck Blaisdell, pastor, Hilo Coast United Church of Christ, Honomu, Hawaii
Just when we needed a new and fresh word o the Word, along comes Bob Hill's new book. His gifts as preacher, poet, writer offer that rare demonstration that a sermon can be crafted that reads as well as it is heard. --Rev. Johnny Wray, Director, Week of Compassion, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
