Following the Sandhill Cranes in Colorado becomes a very intimate journey when reading about the adventure through the eyes of Evelyn Horn. In addition to the Cranes, she introduces the reader to many of her other feathered companions encountered along the way. Horn's keen observation skills alert the reader to bird behavior that many avid birdwatchers may have failed to notice.

I am writing this in 2010: I learned how to manuver my way through the Amazon proceedures.
This book, Following the Sandhill Cranes in Colorado, is my first. It grew from my encounters with the Sandhill Cranes as they stop-over for a night's rest at Hart's Basin, a reservoir half a mile from my home. This reservoir is shown on maps as Fruitgrowers Reservoir, but the local people refer to it as Hart's Basin (the family name of early settlers who owned the low area that is now filled with water for irrigation).
The cranes, with their wild, primitive cries, often fly directly over our home: How can I resist them? I can't! And so much of my time is spent down at the reservoir looking for or looking at these magnificient birds. And of course, there are other birds. Lots of them! And so I found myself not only following the cranes' migration route, but studying the other ducks and shorebirds as well.
A marvelous place indeed! And now, in 2010, I'm still following the cranes and the birds.
Evelyn Horn is a recognized authority for sandhill cranes at Hart's Basin. Migratory bird biologists and managers across the flyway have econtacted her for the latest information on bird movements through this part of Colorado. Her accounts are a delghtful glimpse into an important migratory bird area as she sees it.
