People of the Red Earth American Indians of Colorado Praise for Poeple of The Red Earth "People of the Red Earth: American Indians of Colorado fills the need for a general introduction to Colorado's American Indian heritage, both ancient and recent. Author Sally Crum, a Colorado archaeologist, takes the reader on a tour of cultures, from Ice Age hunters to our modern-day city and reservtion neighbors. This lively book combines up-to-date scientific research findings with information from historical and ethnographic kiterature, enhanched by personal knowledge. Travelers will appreciate each chapter's suggested places to visit and the appendix interpreting Colorado's many place names of Indian origin. The informative text and illustrations make this book a treasure to be used and shared." --------Susan Collins, State Archaeologisy of Colorado "Readers have the opportunity to see American Indian history as dynamic and complex and, most significantly, as part of present day society." ---------Sally Cole, author of Legacy on Stone: Rock Art of Colorado Plateau and Four Corners Region
The Paleo-Indians People hunted and gathered food in Colorado at least as early as twelve thousand years ago. Although an archaeological site in Texas may date to thirty-seven thousand years ago, this date is disputed, and the earliest known sites in Colorado have been radiocarbon dated at no more than 12,000 b.p. (before present). Archaeologists call the first humans to occupy the New World Paleo-Indians, the word paleo meaning ancient in Greek.
