Synopsis

The History in a Box Series is a multimedia resource kits for history educators. To truly appreciate Abraham Lincoln’s significance, it is essential to look at the original sources, the letters, speeches, and other documents that he wrote. Only in this way can we begin to appreciate the difficult decisions that he made as president. This collection of annotated primary sources uses letters, images, and other first-person documents to address the fascinating issues raised by Lincoln’s life. Organized around three themes: People, Places, and Politics, these themes infuse each of the eight chronological sections covered in the box. This thematic approach encourages students to examine the role of individuals, both famous and ordinary, in shaping the events of the Civil War era. How did a self-educated, rough-hewn lawyer with virtually no administrative experience become the savior of the Union? How did a proponent of colonization (the removal and relocation of former slaves) who told jokes that we would find racially offensive become a proponent, toward the end of his life, of suffrage for African American men? How did a young man known as a freethinker who rejected religious dogma come to write the Second Inaugural, with its powerful religious cadences and its Old Testament conception of a God who had brought war to punish America for the sin of slavery? One cannot make sense of the outcome or meaning of the Civil War without reckoning with Abraham Lincoln. Each volume of the History in a Box series, includes: A resource book with annotated primary sources, artwork, maps, discussion questions, and a list of additional resources; accompanied by an electronic version of the book on CD-ROM; A sequential set of posters of documents and illustrations; 8 to 10 portrait placards of key individuals; A timeline; Lectures by eminent historians (DVD); Music and/or dramatic readings of letters from the period (CD-ROM).
