9781933227405: Land of Milk and Money: A Novel (Portuguese in the Americas Series)

Land of Milk and Money tells the story of the Francisco family, Portuguese immigrants who build a prosperous California dairy farm. With their growing success, plans to return to the Old Country fall by the wayside, and the legacy of the older generation becomes a source of contention among descendants competing to inherit herds of cattle and tracts of farmland. As matriarch, Teresa had devoted her life to keeping the peace in her big family. But when she dies long-simmering resentments and feuds burst into the open--and into the courtroom. Teresa, however, had seen it all coming, and her will contains a few surprises.

From the Author:

When I was a boy, I had a tree house made of twine. The twine came from the remains of hay bales used to feed cattle on our family dairy farm. I braided the twine into ropes that I stretched among the branches of a tree in our backyard to anchor the space occupied by my tree house. Individual strands were then woven back and forth among the anchor ropes, creating a taut mesh that formed the floor and walls. The result was a sisal-fiber penthouse in the treetops, perfect for long, comfortable hours of reading or the occasional gently-swaying nap. I was probably one of the few boys who read Tolkien's account of Lothlórien ensconced in a woven aerie in an Ailanthus tree.
I wrote Land of Milk and Money in the same way I created my tree house. The trial scenes framing the structure occur in chronological order at regular intervals beginning each major division throughout the book, while flashbacks to other incidents in the lives of the principals are woven about them, finally knotted together in the resolution of the family battle.

From the Back Cover:

"One of the West's singular migrations--from the Azores to California's Great Central Valley--is given faces and voices in Anthony Barcellos's new novel, Land of Milk and Money. Along with its triumphs, the Francisco family embodies the challenges to an immigrant family in what is for them a new land, including the often-ignored difficulties posed by success and the loss of the old culture. A must read."
--Gerald Haslam, author of The Great Central Valley

"In Land of Milk and Money, Barcellos mines rich family history to create a full-blooded tale that readers will find insightful, rewarding, and entertaining."
--John Lescroart, author of The Hunter

"Brilliantly orchestrated, hilariously funny, and at the same time touching. . . . The characters are a lively and varied bunch and Mr. Barcellos delineates them with considerable verve, humor, and intelligence. You will enjoy getting to know them."
--Julian Silva, author of Move Over, Scopes and Other Writings

"Exceptional descriptive writing. Laugh out loud funny."
--Max Norris, former Sacramento Bee book review editor

"I'm afraid you're going to get into a lot of trouble."
--Mary Chancellor, the author's sister
