About the Author:

Franco Loi was born in Genoa in 1930, but grew up in a working-class area of Milan, where his family moved in 1937. He has lived in Milan ever since. Throughout the late 1940s and the 1950s, Loi worked at the loading docks at Lambrate and Rinascente, in the industrial area of Milan, an experience that greatly affected his politics and writing. He worked at the Milan publishing house Mondadori from 1960 to 1983. Since 1987 he has been a frequent contributor of essays and reviews on poetry to many publications, including bimonthly articles for the Sunday cultural supplement of the national newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. He has published numerous books of poetry, most recently his selected poems, Aria de la memoria, published by Einaudi in 2005, and has been translated into several European languages as well as into Arabic. In 2005 he was awarded the prestigious Premio Librex-Montale.
Andrew Frisardi is the author of Death of a Dissembler (poems, 2014), The Young Dante and the One Love (essays, 2013), and The Quest for Knowledge in Dante's Convivio (essays, 2015); the translator of various volumes from Italian, including an annotated edition of Dante's Vita Nova (2012); and the editor of Daily Bread: Art and Work in the Reign of Quantity (2015), a collection of essays by Brian Keeble. His awards include a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation, a Hawthornden Literary Fellowship, and the Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets. Originally from Boston, he lives in central Italy.

Review:

Franco Loi has been one of the main protagonists of the renewal that dialect poetry experienced in the early seventies, thus establishing himself as a necessary reference pont for the authors of subsequent generations and above all as the model of an ethically committed poetry. --Giuseppe Gallo

Loi s poetic 'I' speaks in the first person but arises . . . from a deeply felt need for communion.. . . like the breviary of a believer who neglects nothing that lives. --Giovanni Tesio
