9781934009574: Leading a Learning Organization: The Science of Working with Others

Written for principals and teacher leaders and directed primarily at improving the quality of organizational learning in schools, Leading a Learning Organization begins with an examination of the vital but often overlooked role that emotion plays in school cultures, including the fear and stress that are generated by the rapid pace of change and demands for accountability. Author Dr. Casey Reason draws on educational, psychological, and neuroscientific research to argue that leaders can change the prevailing emotional climate of a school in order to promote deeper learning at all levels. This resource looks at how to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of improving a school s emotional climate. It presents specific strategies to enhance organizational learning, including the change, analysis, and reframing strategy; purpose-driven inquiry; the creation of a defined learning culture; conscious use of current scientific knowledge about memory, and the use of empowering mental representations. Finally, Leading a Learning Organization explores the benefits of collaboration in building deep organizational learning and provides strategies for leaders to introduce collaboration more effectively and more frequently among school staffs.

About the Author:

Casey Reason has worked with hundreds of educational leaders from all over the world, from inner-city Phoenix to Auckland, New Zealand, on breakthrough strategies designed to improve performance and overcome resistance to change. At age 30, Casey was named principal of Whitmer High School, one of the largest urban schools in Ohio. Using innovative leadership and reform strategies based on collaboration, the staff of Whitmer led an impressive turnaround in student achievement and behavior.

Review:

In Leading a Learning Organization, Casey Reason describes concepts and strategies we know to be essential for optimal classroom learning, including building a safe, connected, respectful learning environment, and applies them to learning organizations. Dr. Reason describes practical application of the research on the emotional and social factors affecting learning to everyday life within schools and other learning organizations. What a concept! This is great science made practical for leaders in the world of learning. -- -- --Bob Sornson, author of Creating Classrooms Where Teachers Love to Teach and Students Love to Learn

Is there anything more important than the effective education of our children? Casey Reason s very timely book on leadership focuses on principals and teacher leaders those closest to the kids. Reason makes a difficult and complicated subject, the science of working together, accessible to all. His practical strategies and solutions can uncover the greatness in everyone involved in schools. Educators should read and study this book and then make the necessary changes to improve our schools for the better. --Ken Blanchard, co-author of the One Minute Manager and Leading at a Higher Level

NCLB, EOC, and standardized testing have done much over the past decade to instill fear. This author helps us to recognize this emotion and then to deal with it. . . . A must for every school leader and board member who wants success. --Barbara Erwin, Clinical Associate Professor, Educational Leadership and Policy, Indiana University
