The Mexican village of Todos Santos, located on the Baja peninsula, 50 miles northwest of Cabo San Lucas, is rich in history. Catholic missionaries founded the pueblo in 1723. Although the settlement was shocked when a priest mated with an Indian woman, it was soon evident that the children of that union greatly influenced the political and economic growth of the tropical oasis. In earlier times, women ground coffee beans with a rock, washed clothes on rocks at the river, used yucca roots as laundry soap, boiled corn with pulverized limestone as a basis for tortillas, and cooked over open wood fires. Some of those earlier methods are continued today. The people took pride in the way they had managed with so little. They were content with their lifestyle, but most wanted their children educated at the highest level possible. Their stories were treasures to hear and a pleasure to share. Todos Santos was recently named one of the ten magical cities in the entire Republic of Mexico. Most of this magic comes from the Mexican people who inhabit it. They are the true "treasures of Todos Santos."
