This anthology presents the wide spectrum of poetry, poetic prose and fiction produced from 1980-2012 by 46 Puerto Rican women writers in New York. Some write in English, others in Spanish and a few of them write in both languages. The book also includes biographies of the writers, documenting their activism and offering a glimpse at their role in the artistic, social, political and intellectual history of New York s communities. A primary purpose of this work is to make known an existing literature which eloquently celebrates struggles with memories and characters, possesses an acute awareness of language uses and modalities, and is packed with fierce passion, quiet meditative tones, urban rhythms, poignant humor, and unique, sometimes visionary styles. The pieces included often reflect the human efforts to live with dignity and hope, and the complexities of a migration process. This splendid literary wealth creates a context for the appreciation of emerging works and the discussion of issues of literary criticism that can spring from the texts themselves. Breaking Ground / Abriendo caminos may inspire new generations of Puerto Rican/ Latino writers, as well as writers of other backgrounds. It will definitely bring delight to many readers.

Review:

True to its title, this comprehensive bilingual anthology of contemporary New York Puerto Rican women writers categorically represents a groundbreaking endeavor. The literary corpus included herein offers a vast and noteworthy selection of both well recognized and promising emerging authors. Without a doubt, this collection is a much-needed addition to the study of the literature of the Puerto Rican diaspora and an indispensable source in understanding how the experiences of migration, translocality, hybridity, and cultural, racial, and gender subjectivities and negotiations are rendered through creative expression. --Edna Acosta-Belen, Distinguished Professor, University at Albany SUNY and contributing editor to the Norton Anthology of Latino Literature

To anthologize is a very specific thing to do and Myrna Nieves has a keen perceptive eye and does this expertly and genuinely. In this book you will find some of the best writing around the nation. --Miguel Algarin, writer and critic, founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
