To all who knew him, Joe Haan was larger than life but he was also deeply scarred. The death of his mother at a young age; a childhood spent in a bleak orphanage; years as an indentured farm servant; riding the rails with hobos and criminals during the Great Depression; working in a remote CCC camp along the Canadian border; and violent combat experiences during WWII. To express his deepest feelings Joe used many creative outlets, writing poetry and music, as well as playing the guitar and the harmonica.

About the Author:
B. Wayne Quist has recently coauthored two books on radical, militant Islamism and the ideology of al Qaeda Winning the War on Terror and The Triumph of Democracy Over Militant Islamism and has plans for a third book in the series, A New Approach to the Greater Middle East. He is a popular speaker on the subject of militant Islamism and lectured at the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Forum. He retired from the Air Force in the rank of full colonel and has written many publications in the fields of national security, political science, and American history. He is currently a partner with Northstar Industries, Inc. in Wayzata, Minnesota, where he specializes in the sale and recapitalization of privately held companies. He also serves on the boards of non-profit organizations in Minnesota and Washington, DC. Wayne graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and has advanced degrees from the University of Southern California and National War College, specializing in the Middle East. Wayne is Joe's nephew. His mother was ''Sis.''
Review:
''Private Joe Haan was a Minnesota boy who endured the unendurable and emerged a great man. A poet and musician, a Purple Heart hero of WWII, and a self-educated man who rose from the bleakness of the Depression. This is a book of hard-earned wisdom.''

Garrison Keillor

''God's Angry Man achieves exactly what we strive towards here at The National WWII Museum: to tell the story of the war through the eyes of those citizen soldiers who were there. Through his Uncle Joe's eloquent letters, poems and other writings, B. Wayne Quist has given the reader a unique perspective on the war that changed the world.''

Gordon H. ''Nick'' Mueller, PhD
President and CEO, The National World War II Museum
New Orleans, Louisiana

''Private Joe Haan's violent combat experience in Patton's Third Army in WWII is noted most vividly through his writings penned while sharing a foxhole with a dead German soldier in Alsace-Lorraine, France. Awarded the Bronze Star for valor behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Bulge and wounded in hand-to-hand combat in 1945, Joe was decorated with the Purple Heart. This is an inspirational true story of one man's victory in his struggle for survival. A remarkable journey . . . a must read.''

Lieutenant General Thomas G. McInerney, USAF (Ret)
Former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, United States Air Force

''Here's the story of one of Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation. Like his compatriots, Joe Haan's life was characterized not only by what he achieved, but by what he survived. What makes this book unique is that here is a voice from the underside of that era, one of the forgotten and discarded children who refused to go quietly, but fought defiantly against the odds for his place in the sun.''

Reverend J. Leland Mebust Sr., PhD
Pastor (Retired), Ascension Lutheran, Towson, Maryland
Princeton Theological Seminary

''God's Angry Man: The Incredible Journey of Private Joe Haan speaks to the life of every orphan who rose to challenge the world and conquer its every obstacle; through his poetry and perseverance, Joe Haan expressed a deep understanding of life.''

Odeh A. Muhawesh
Adjunct Professor, University of St. Thomas, Minnesota

''Joe's ethos is an anomaly given his time and locality, a rare breed for his age. Yet through this work Joe's inspiration is clear and in context. At the Orphanage Museum, it is held that there are 10,635 stories of the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children, one for each child passing through its doors . . . Joe's path is distinctive and clearly illustrated through his stark verse.''

Daniel J. Parrish
Moeckly Curator and Historian, Owatonna Orphanage Museum, Minnesota

''Some books tell stories, some describe events. God's Angry Man is one of those rare books that combines a fascinating tale with the unfolding of momentous historical events of the 20th century.''

Norm Cull
Retired Ironworker
Spokane, Washington --Praise for God's Angry Man
