Synopsis

The fifth edition of TARGET - The Veterinary Antimicrobial Reference Guide to Effective Treatment, is now available in print or may be downloaded free (compliments of Bayer Healthcare LLC) to your iPad or smartphone. TARGET is an industry favorite assisting veterinarians worldwide to better treat microbial infections in small animals. The app ranks the efficacy of 24 antimicrobials against 13 of the most common pathogens in dogs and cats. Selection of the most cost-effective antimicrobial and dosage for maximum efficacy is easy using the color-coded antimicrobial rating system. Over 257,000 cultures from more than 7,500 veterinary clinics throughout North America contributed to the data in this edition. The fifth edition has been extensively updated. Dosing strategies aimed at improving efficacy, reducing side effects and emergence of resistance are advocated where appropriate. Changes in resistant and sensitive MIC breakpoints has reduced the Call for Dose Option II; however where appropriate, it is used. The Relative Cost factor allows the clinician to compare relative costs to achieve comparable efficacies when choosing between antimicrobials. The Formulary section provides trade names, formulations, pharmacology, toxicity, and contraindication information on each antimicrobial, as well as dosing for each specie. TARGET was developed by author David Aucoin, DVM, Dip. ACVCP. Use TARGET and make selecting the appropriate antimicrobial and dose for the most probable pathogen at each location a simple process.
