The sixth edition of The Baby Boom: Americans Born 1946 to 1964 is a definitive reference by a nationally recognized authority on the Baby Boom. Here author Cheryl Russell, a noted authority on the Baby Boom, analyzes the demographic and spending data you need to fully understand this huge and influential generation that now faces an historic economic downturn just as it approaches retirement.

Most of the Baby Boom's 76 million members are in their peak earning years, and they still spend more than any other generation on most products and services. At the same time, the economic downturn has driven home the fact that Boomers may have to endure an old age with inadequate health care and meager incomes. How can businesses and government serve their needs? The Baby Boom is your guide to this all-important but beleaguered generation.

The Baby Boom: Americans Born 1946 to 1964 is designed for easy use. It is divided into eleven chapters, organized alphabetically--Attitudes, Education, Health, Housing, Income, Labor Force, Living Arrangements, Population, Spending, Time Use, and Wealth.

New to this edition is a chapter on attitudes based on data from the 2008 General Social Survey. Also in this volume are the latest statistics on the labor force participation, living arrangements, incomes, health (including new tables on the use of alternative medicine), spending, and wealth of the Baby Boom generation.

With The Baby Boom: Americans Born from 1946 through 1964 in your hands, you have a guide not only to boomers as they confront economic crisis but to the likely course of our nation as well.

Review:

The 6th edition of The Baby Boom: Americans Born 1946 to 1964 incorporates the latest federal government statistics that capture changes in the aging baby-boom generation through 2008. The boomers, some 76 million who are now 45 to 63 years of age, comprise a large and dynamic segment of the U.S. population and, therefore, represent an important influence on the overall socioeconomic status of the country. A broad perspective of the boomers, compared with other generations, is portrayed in 11 chapters covering attitudes, education, health, housing, income, labor force, living arrangements, population, spending, time use, and wealth. Each chapter is introduced by highlights, followed by tables and charts as well as brief text, that summarizes and places in perspective significant trends and comparisons. Table of contents, lists of tables and graphics, a glossary, a bibliography (containing Internet sites), and an index ease the search for specific information. The editors have made a wide array of government statistics accessible and relevant, thus enabling those wishing to communicate with, or simply to understand, the boomers to find essential information conveniently and quickly. This is one of a series of guides by New Strategist each featuring a U.S. generation [iGeneration, Millennials, Generation X, Baby Boom, Older Americans]. --American Reference Books Annual
