A Cure for Emma chronicles a mother’s quest to heal her child from a nearly invisible disease: type 1 diabetes. Millions of parents around the world will relate to Julie Colvin’s roller coaster of despair, frustration, and hope when her daughter Emma was diagnosed with this life-threatening, incurable nightmare. Overnight, Julie left her medical career to become a full-time surrogate pancreas for her daughter. A Cure for Emma is also a spiritual look at one woman’s journey from anguish to hope. Writing with humor and honesty, this devoted mother offers a warm, revealing look at the spiritual questions disease forces into one’s life. We follow Julie’s quest to cut a deal with her analytical, scientifically-trained mind and investigate a world that could not be proven in a lab. While seeking a cure for Emma she risks everything, including her marriage, to follow a path of discovery and wonder.

From the Publisher:

At last there is real hope for families affected by Type I diabetes.

Denise L. Faustman, MD, PhD has worked in the field of autoimmunity for over fifteen years and has made key discoveries regarding the role of MHC Class I antigen presentation in immunity. Dr. Faustman has cured mice of type 1 diabetes by stopping the assault of killer `T' cells upon the pancreatic islet cells.

Data from the Phase I study show that BCG treatment eliminated disease-causing T cells that attack the pancreas, increased the number of beneficial regulatory T cells (Tregs), and restored the ability of the pancreas to secrete insulin for a time. Notably, study participants had been living with type 1 diabetes for an average of 15 years.

Business icon Lee Iacocca lost his wife to diabetic complications at the age of 57. The Iacocca Foundation was established 20 years ago, and Lee pledged to find a cure within his lifetime. He is so confident in Dr. Faustman's research that he has committed all the foundation's resources, plus a million dollars of his own money, to Dr. Faustman.

A Cure for Emma is also donating a portion of its profits to Dr. Faustman's cutting-edge research.

From the Author:

During fourteen years as a registered diagnostic medical sonographer, I acquired a vast knowledge of the body and its organ systems. Not until dis-ease struck my family did I become aware of a larger picture of health - one that involved natural holistic approaches, self-empowerment, and the thoughts we choose to think.

I have since been dedicated to learning healing modalities that involve the dynamics of what we are made of--Energy. And what fuels that energy--Our Beliefs. My ultimate motivation has been my family and our goal to achieve a healthy balance of body, mind, and spirit.

I have learned many different natural therapy modalities, including: VoiceBio analysis, reflexology, spiritual psychology, energy healing facilitation, quantum touch, and emotional freedom techniques. I love to mix this natural wisdom with my base of medical awareness, as I find it keeps me grounded while I navigate between these two worlds.

Beautiful northern Ontario, Canada is the place I call home, shared with my husband and two incredible children. I look forward to a lifetime of learning, and an opportunity to share my experiences with others embarking on a journey to better health.
