In part one, J.C. Hilliard chronicles life in 1950's rural Georgia when life was simpler, but much harder. The author describes his early years growing up in a sharecropping family who barely made ends meet while farming for others. In a time when poor Southern farmers had little of the sophisticated equipment used today, Hilliard recalls the hard labor methods used to plant and harvest crops that many today have little knowledge of. Part two details his life as a teenager entering the Marine Corps, which was common in the late 1960's as our country called for men to serve in Vietnam. Hilliard details the physical and mental discipline needed to survive the rigors of boot camp on Parris Island that honed him into a Marine who served his country with distinction, receiving two Purple Hearts during action in jungle fighting. As A Tale That Is Told is a unique biography of a Southern youth working hard to overcome life s adversities and make it through hard times to become a Marine who served his country with distinction. The story details many events which have valuable life lessons for today s readers as Hilliard learned to overcome hardships that would have broken lesser men.

This book was inspired by the life I lived as a boy growing up in rural Georgia. I ve never had any writing experience but want to give this generation a look at what life was like while growing up in the 1950 s and early 1960 s in Georgia. To those of you who grew up in the 50 s and early 60 s, this book is dedicated to those times we now cherish. All the facts and times in this book are real, not fictional. They occurred as I was growing up and share my perspective on historic events in America. I have related them as best as my memory will let me.
