In the early 90's, a lady named Zoe Kirkpatrick spoke at a conference I attended and told stories about friends of hers. These wild characters I'd seen before, but I wasn't intimate with them the way Zoe was. The stories were bigger than life. A few were just plain unbelievable. I wanted to know more. Stalking her after the conference, I quizzed her, trying to find out how she'd come to know all these tales. That conference - a Native Plant Society area meeting in Midland, Texas - wasn't the first time I'd heard that many plants have legends attached to them. After all, Tomie dePaulo's books were some of my daughters' favorites , but it was the first time I heard them as Zoe told them: stories of her old friends, the wildflowers scattered across her West Texas ranch.About the Author:
