Douwlina's story began with great sadness when she lost her mother to poachers, but it has a happy ending. From the time Douwlina was rescued, loving people”and even animals”have stepped forward to care for her. In Africa, where Douwlina lives, there were once over 100,000 of these smart, magnificent animals. Now, there are less than 20,000 on the entire continent, and one is poached every day in the Kruger Park alone. Rhino are killed illegally for their horn, because people believe it has power in traditional medicine and rituals. The cost for an ounce of horn can be as high as five times the price of gold. This tender story shows how each animal and human who has been part of her life has helped her. It highlights the bonds between people and animals and reminds us of the importance of being good stewards of the animals who share the planet with us.

About the Author:

Douwlina now lives on the farm of author Grace Borgeson. As she began getting to know the animals that shared the land with her and learned more of the moving details of the little rhino's life, she realized that her purpose in Africa was to tell Douwlina's story. Her deep faith has moved her to help people all around the world understand they can help preserve the magnificent species of the African continent, particularly the rhino. She is a founding partner in Hope 12 Industries, Inc., whose Dira brand products were developed with a focus to build and expand revenue for African game parks in order to support habitat and wildlife management. Funds from the book go to Care for Wild Africa (an organization dedicated to rescuing and raising the orphans of poached female rhino and to the care and nurture of other orphaned or wounded wildlife) and other South African organizations and groups working to stop rhino poaching.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 2-5-After her mother was killed by poachers, Douwlina was adopted and cared for by humans. Interesting details capture the logistics of an animal growing up without a mother; when Douwlina moved to a farm, the son had to teach the baby white rhino how to take mud baths. Concise sentences and bullet points add information about the species, though source notes are absent. The author conveys her observations of Douwlina: "she did not dent my car that day, but in her eagerness to visit with people, she has left a number of scratches and dents on other vehicles." Mixed-media scenes rely on patterned borders, textured designs, cut-out images, and photographs. The frequent use of a color font creates a jarring effect against each bright page. The placement of full-page photographs of African wildlife appears disjointed in its presentation rather than painting a richer picture of the rhino's natural world. The author's religious beliefs most significantly influence the text during her earnest call to action. "At the time of her birth, only God knew if she would live and one day thrive. The goodness of God worked through the love and kindness of people caring for His little rhino." Limitations aside, there is much heart in this story of survival.-Meg Smith, Cumberland County Public Library, Fayetteville, NCα(c) Copyright 2011. Book Description Bright Sky Press, United States, 2012. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. There are two kinds of stories in the world: those that have sad endings and those that have happy endings. Douwlina s story began with great sadness when she lost her mother to poachers, but it has a happy ending. From the time Douwlina was rescued, loving people-and even animals-have stepped forward to care for her.In Africa, where Douwlina lives, there were once over 100,000 of these smart, magnificent animals. Now, there are less than 20,000 on the entire continent, and one is poached every day in the Kruger Park alone. Rhino are killed illegally for their horn, because people believe it has power in traditional medicine and rituals. The cost for an ounce of horn can be as high as five times the price of gold. Until people everywhere understand the plight of the rhino, each rhino is in danger. Douwlina s journey to safety takes her to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in South Africa, where in addition to the dedicated staff, a lamb cares for her. When she is old enough to live on her own in the wild, she moves to the farm of Annales and Johan. But Douwlina has spent so much time with loving humans that she acts more like an enormous house pet than a wild animal. This tender story shows how each animal and human who has been part of her life has helped her-first to survive, then to thrive and at last to live among her own kind as she was born to do. It highlights the bonds between people and animals and reminds us of the importance of being good stewards of the animals who share the planet with us. Seller Inventory # BTE9781936474639
