The Colors in my Life Rainbow
In trying to determine how best to end the book there just wasn’t a way I could make peace with. Then one morning I awakened with this whole “Rainbow” chapter in my head. Rainbows have always been very important in my life. It seemed they always came when I needed encouragement most. Color also was very symbolic for me. So in summing up the victorious chapter of my life I have chosen to share stories of people I met when telling my story around the world. These incredible stories are from people that impacted my life, because they allowed me to impact theirs.
RED – BAMBI – SIERRA LEONE
Bambi was a young man I met in Makeni, Sierra Leone, West Africa. It was 1998 and the rebels had descended on his village and massacred his entire family in front of him. It was hard to imagine this handsome, smiling young man in front of me had witnessed and experienced such horror. But his body bore witness to the crimes of abuse. His arms had been cruelly amputated with a machete, cut off halfway between the wrist and elbow. He had heard my story in the big outdoor crusade and the Bible school leader brought him to me for an interview.
Bambi said he had heard my story on forgiveness and wanted to tell me his story. It had been a year since his family had been murdered in front of him. He was only eighteen at the time.
With machetes the rebels slaughtered his entire family in a killing frenzy that lasted only a few minutes. They chopped off both of Bambi’s arms midway between the wrist and elbow. Then the rebels somehow got distracted, and ran outside. Bambi used the opportunity to escape.
Desperately he ran with all his might, away from the screams and terror, leaving a trail of blood. The sun was sinking on the horizon and he had been running for a while. Bambi was weakening, and his heart pounding in terror kept the blood pouring down what was left of his arms.
He fell to his knees on the side of the road, still trying to hold up what was left of his arms. Suddenly a man appeared and stood in front of him. Bambi knew about God, but this man said his name was Jesus, and he was there to help Bambi. He told him how to tear his shirt with his teeth and tourniquet his arms, and assured Bambi he would guide him to safety.
Bambi felt new strength surge through his body and felt somehow comforted by this stranger’s presence. Suddenly the man was gone, but Bambi now knew what direction to go. He made it to a refugee center and got medical help. The Germans sent a medical team to Bambi’s refugee camp. They did surgeries on the refuges that helped them regain small use of their hacked off limbs. Bambi’s surgery had separated the muscle of his forearms so that he could pick up objects and feed and dress himself.
Some months later he met a missionary and learned about the man he had met on the road – Jesus – someone he had never heard of, and then he truly realized what a miracle he had experienced.
As Bambi told me his story, his whole face was just glowing with joy and peace, especially as he related the part about Jesus, the man he had never known or heard of, that rescued him on that road. He was attending Bible school, and the school director said Bambi was their most excited, exuberant student. He was a strong leader, and a messenger of hope to all who knew him.
So Bambi is RED to me – a reminder of the blood that he shed, but the life and joy he brought to others hearts as he shared his heart and the power of the help that Jesus gave him. People may doubt Bambi’s story and his experience, but Bambi doesn’t mind. It’s real to him, and that encounter on the road running away from Makeni changed him forever. Now Bambi’s life and story are changing others’ lives.
