When an accident takes the life of her mother in 1975, eight-year-old Laura Meegan is left in the care of her father's staff at Montrose Manor in Ireland while he loses himself in the thoroughbred racing circuit. Befriended by the horse trainer's son, Liam, Laura's sense of well-being begins to return as they explore the estate on their Arabian horses. The cave they discover is a perfect hideaway for playing acoustic guitars and crafting songs, but it soon becomes a refuge when new arrivals at Montrose threaten their very lives. Laura's new stepmother crosses the line from discipline to violence, and Liam must rise up in a transformation from passive stable boy to bold protector. In the stillness of the cave he likens himself to a kite that never knows which way the wind will blow. From being hunted down by an evil deacon to living inside the manor as if he were Aidan Meegan's own son, Liam's uncertainty about the future is answered only by Laura. His bond with her, now a deep, yet forbidden young love, drives him to scholastic achievement in hopes of surviving the test of class distinction and ultimately proving his worthiness to Laura's father. As young teens, Laura and Liam must fight temptation in the test of their moral fiber. They take on allies while braving new adversaries, some who would unravel their secret. Many are watching, including one who yearns incessantly for Liam.
