Composed between December of 1909 and January of 1910, the Première Rhapsodie was written for clarinet examinations at the Paris Conservatoire, where Debussy had just been named to the Board of Directors by Gabriel Fauré. Instrumentation was originally clarinet and piano, as presented in this edition, but Debussy soon orchestrated the piece.
