How in Heaven’s Name is a microcosm of the uprooting and dislocation that have characterized much of modern Korean and East Asian history. It is based on the true story of several Korean youths who in the late 1930s were lured into the Japanese Imperial Army either through promises by the Japanese colonial overlords of a government clerkship upon discharge or by means of threats to transplant their entire families to colonial outposts in Manchuria.

Cho Chongnae is one of Korea's most important living writers. Born in 1943, he has dedicated his writing life to illuminating modern Korea s conflicted history. His 1974 story of shoeshine boys in Seoul, The Ice Age, spearheaded a stream of socially engaged Korean fiction and has been called the finest Korean short story of the 1970s. Cho subsequently set his sights on the geographical partition of the Korean peninsula and the ideological divisions among the Korean people. His 1981 story Land of Exile (title story of Land of Exile: Contemporary Korean Fiction, rev. and exp. ed., trans. Marshall R. Pihl and Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton 2007) profiles a peasant whose homicidal past during the Korean War irrevocably alienates him from both the Left and the Right. For this story Cho received the 27th Modern Literature Award. In 1983 Cho developed the theme of this story into the novel Playing With Fire. But it is the massive historical novels that followed for which Cho is best known today: the 10-volume novel The T aebaek Mountains (1989), the 12-volume Arirang (1995), and the 10-volume The Han River (2002). Together these three works offer a panorama of Korea extending from the period of Japanese colonization to South Korea's development into a high-tech industrialized nation. More than 10 million copies of these novels have been sold a record in Korean publishing.
