Our lives are full of problems -- small and large -- from knowing how to find pencil to understanding what to do if you are bullied. Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty coming up with effective ways to solve problems. But if you know how to solve problems, life is much easier! Successful Problem-Solving for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders teaches children how to use a simple rubric to solve problems in the classroom, home, and community. Foreword by Brenda Smith Myles, PhD.

Kerry Mataya, MSED, is the founder of Autism Asperger Syndrome Consulting Group, LLC, and Asperger Connection, Inc. In the Alabama area, she has provided almost 10 years of educational consulting, after-school social groups, and summer camps, including overnight camp, drama camp, sports camp, and play-with-me camp. She received her master's degree from the University of Kansas with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders. Penney Patterson Owens, MED, BCBA, works as a behavioral and educational consultant. She has taught in the classroom as a special education teacher and is now working to educate teachers, parents, and students about positive behavior support and behavior analysis. Penney received her master's degree from Vanderbilt University in early childhood special education. Her thesis and previous research explored receptive and expressive language interventions with children with autism. She works both in and out of the classroom to provide students with comprehensive interventions between home and school.
Kerry Mataya and Penney Owens have created an ingeniously simple, yet comprehensive solution to a complex problem. The strategy teaches problem-solving and related social skills by building on strength in visual processing. The Problem-Solving Chart is a vital tool for supporting high-functioning individuals with ASD. We use this practical technique with children, adolescents, and adults in our private practice. This book is a great resource for parents, educators, and others who support individuals with ASD. It is highly recommended. --Ruth Aspy, PhD, and Barry G. Grossman, PhD
The Problem-Solving Chart is a versatile tool that many teachers have adopted and implemented in their daily routines within our school district. It has proven effective when used consistently in daily programming for many students, ranging in age from kindergarten through high school. The chart has enabled students to develop social relationships as well as participate successfully in small-group activities with others. This tool is a must-have for teachers or parents of students who may be perceived as having difficulty getting along with others. --Susan Peppenhorst, MAED, BCBA
Kerry and Penney at AASCG have been a godsend. They recognize that each child is unique and that sometimes traditional approaches do not work with some children. Kerry worked with our son s teachers to tailor a behavior chart and tracking log that he easily understood and even had a part in designing. When he was younger, Kerry's Problem-Solving Chart allowed him to understand and take control of his emotions. Over the time he has spent with AASCG groups, he has become more social and confident and now even takes part in sporting activities with children his own age. --Angie and Bret Hill, parents of 10-year-old boy with Asperger Syndrome
