Originally given by Charles H.C. Kim at The Peace School, this book’s 31 talks offer practical yet profound insight into becoming a person of peace amid the challenges we face in today’s world. Peace Breathing combines the vital energy of breath with the powerful energy of thought to calm your mind, reduce stress, and open your heart to your true self. Kim draws on more than 45 years of meditation practice and uses vivid stories and examples from nature and everyday life to show how we can bring peace to ourselves and the world.

Charles H.C. Kim is President of The Peace School, a non-profit, educational organization founded in Chicago by his father in 1972. Kim began his lifelong practice of meditation when he was in elementary school. He teaches Peace Breathing Meditation, Peace Yoga and Traditional Tae Kwon Do. He believes these practices have the power to build world peace, one person at a time.

About the Author:

Hwi Chul Kim was born in Kwang Ju, South Korea in 1953 and lived in Seoul during much of his childhood. He took the name Charles when he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1980. Kim began sitting in on his parents’ morning meditations when he was in elementary school and has continued daily meditation practice throughout his life. Weak and in poor health as a child, Kim joined yoga and martial art classes at his father’s main do jang and within a year felt healthy enough to begin more intensive practice. Kim learned to reach beyond his physical power to persevere through the rigorous training with men twice his size. By the time he was in his early teens Kim became perhaps the youngest martial art instructor of his time.

In 1972 Kim and his parents, three sisters and brother moved to Chicago where he finished high school and helped his father set up and run The Peace School. He is a 9th degree black belt. Kim holds a Bachelors of Actuarial Mathematics from Northeastern Illinois University and a Masters of Computer Science from DePaul University. Since 1981 he has worked as an information technology professional for a large Chicago financial institution. He and his wife, Jennifer, live on Chicago’s north side.

After his father’s passing in 1999, Kim became President of The Peace School. He oversees the School’s operations and teaches Peace Breathing Meditation, Peace Yoga and Traditional Tae Kwon Do. He also conducts Peace Breathing Meditation seminars. Kim is a firm believer in consistent practice and applying methods for creating peace in daily life, not just understanding theories or accumulating knowledge. He is an engaging and intuitive speaker using vivid stories, examples from nature, experiences in the workplace and other illustrations of how we can bring peace to ourselves and to the world.

Li-Young Lee, Award-Winning Poet: “There are plenty of books explaining in detail the health benefits of deep breathing, as well as the psychological rewards of meditation. But this book places that method in the context of everyday life, reminding us to practice and enact meditative presence, meditative awareness, in the real and ongoing world.”
