This is an inspirational book about a woman who overcame all odds to achieve her purpose and destiny in life that is touching thousands of people around the world. Born into poverty and with a junior high education, she was abandoned by her family at 14 and by 23 had seven children. In the throes of abusive relationships, destructive addictions and intrusive thoughts that kept her emotionally imprisoned, Deanna overcame her circumstances when she found the courage to redirect her life. It was in the moment of decision combined with faith and determination that her life was transformed with the help of her internal GPS - a God Positioning Spirit that led the way.
She developed a life coaching practice designed to help people reach their potential by identifying and eliminating barriers while developing healthy patterns to work towards their destiny. For over 20 years she has worked with countless people in educational systems, recovery programs, correctional facilities and law enforcement agencies. erHH Her GPS guided her to aggressively work with at risk youth, who others had given up on, and transformed their lives from despair to destiny. Deanna founded the Self-Mastery Institute, a non-profit program dedicated to helping "at risk" youth discover their empowering purpose and teach skills to transform their lives and become leaders of their communities. This program has received international acclaim and has helped youth throughout the world.
This is a story about how God took a broken and repressed young girl and led her to become a credentialed teacher, author, motivational speaker and personal coach to help people around the world find their purpose and destiny in life. Deanna was guided to make a global difference and she is a testimony of what is possible if you allow the "inner voice" to direct your life.
Coincidentally Oprah Winfrey gave the commencement speech at Harvard in 2013 and was quoted as saying "to be guided by the still small voice that is a GPS within ourselves is to find out what makes us come alive."
In a secular world, people are hungry to find a peace of mind and purpose in life to fill the void they feel inside. This was made evident to Deanna when she was speaking to a group in Geneva, Switzerland. A calming presence came over her and she was inspired to tell the audience that to reach our destination a GPS - God Positioning Spirit is present and we don't have to go the journey on earth alone. She was stunned when people began to cry and asked how do I connect. It is simple - we all have a personal GPS navigator within reach waiting to guide us forward just for the asking. From your heart desire "Ask and you shall receive"
Reading this book will illustrate the power of the GPS that resides within each of us and how it will redirect your life for good and fulfill your destiny here on earth.
"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved." -- William Jennings Bryan
Have you ever wondered about the meaning of life? Especially during a terrible experience that has left you feeling overwhelmed and hopeless, as though you were on a dead-end road without direction or a GPS?
Before I was born, if God had given me a sneak preview of even half my life trials, I would have pleaded mercy and asked not to be born.
As it turned out, my parents were the obvious match from which I needed to learn what not to do, which innately helped prepare me for my life and my destiny. Nonetheless, many of my parent's unhealthy traits filtered deep into my psyche. I duplicated much of their self-destructive behavior throughout my early adult years: rejected by my mom at age 14, married at 15, and mother to seven kids by the time I was 23. Under the guise of love, I endured one abusive relationship after another, believing that physical abuse was the demonstration of love and part of life.
Unable to find my way out of an abyss of darkness created by years of emotional despair, my mind short-circuited. I was institutionalized at Agnews State Mental Hospital. Having no support system to guide me, I was like a magnet attracting people who were loaded on drugs or drunk like me, recycling the same old stories, only adding a little more drama than the previous one. The very thing I disliked about my family when I was young became my template for life, running the blame game in my mind about how unjust people and life were, all the while being part of the dysfunction. I lived a double-standard life, working in the nursing profession and trying to be a functioning mom while at the same time, self-destructive, without hope, heading towards a disastrous collision. I was haunted by my past, unable to turn my life around. Eventually, one by one, my teenage kids moved away to find sanity within their own lives.
One night, alone, physically tired, mentally exhausted, and without direction and in desperation, I hit bottom. Much like a raving lunatic, angry with God, I spouted everything, shouting directives, and screaming what a mistake he had made creating me. I questioned God's intention, sobbing hysterically, hoping that God would hear me in heaven, toward Him while ranting my hostility towards Him. In utter disbelief , God made a house call. His Spirit embraced me with pure love that transformed every fiber of my being. I was healed from addiction; pain-filled memories no longer bound me but became reminders to move forward, revealing that life has meaning. To my surprise, God's Positioning Spirit (GPS) was always within my reach, ready to mentor me throughout my life. What a concept. This book is about how the Creator of the Universe became my personal GPS to navigate life's obstacle course. When I was much younger, I heard that God created everything on earth and lived in heaven. It was mind-boggling to me. How could God know and help me, one person in the midst of a billion souls on earth. To me, life was bleak and offered one certainty--I was alone, left to my own devices to figure it all out through trial, error, pain, and frustration.
As humans, our nature is to desire and seek comfort and security, but this runs counter to our best interest and spiritual growth. We are made to be resilient, not rigid. Yet, many people choose the easy way out because, as Alice Walker said, "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any." They begin to feel powerless, blinded by fear, and stay where they are no matter how bad it is and no matter how deep the pain.
There is a better way.
I have learned that pain signifies the need to push through the illusion and make a breakthrough. I discovered life is a Process of Discovery:
· Position: The first critical step was to Position my life to move forward. I needed to learn to love, to believe in myself, and to identify what was causing me pain and to take a different approach to becoming accountable as a participant in my own life.
· Promise: I realized that even though I loved my parents, their life choices were not the route I wanted to travel for my children or myself. This revelation required me to find mentors whose values reflected the life I imagined myself living; awakening a Promise long-desired to be fulfilled.
· Passion: I knew no one was going to come to my rescue. If anyone did, I realized, there would be a trade off, a condition attached. Therefore, I needed to learn the meaning of love and apply it to myself. I needed to change all of the destructive associations linked to my past and develop a mind-set of possibilities fueled with Passion to move me forward.
· Purpose: Finally, the most healing step was forgiveness. When I forgave myself, my parents, and everyone else who had caused me pain, I began to heal. It was amazing to realize that the most painful, challenging, and humbling experiences of my life were essential components necessary for me to fulfill my life's Purpose.
The truth is that we are all essential, hand-picked by our Creator to fulfill our destiny. I believe each soul has purpose on earth intended to make a difference in people's lives, which requires us to "become" the difference first. Therefore, by learning to trust in our potential through our life trials, which helps to define our character as we walk our talk, then teaching by our example will touch a life.
If you are on a quest to find meaning in your life but disheartening experiences have inhibited you from moving forward, I suggest you view the situation from a different perspective. You know intuitively what you desire in life. Perception, focus, and meaning are everything. Ask yourself: What must I do differently to redirect my life? How will it add value to my loved ones, others, and me? What must I stop thinking about that keeps me stuck in the pain? What will the changes mean to me? How committed am I to set-up new standards to live by?
We are not mistakes. Our life challenges have a purpose. They define our commitment through our process of discovery, or our personalized journey of learning how to defy the odds. Life offers many opportunities to break through the barriers of resistance. A bodybuilder lifting weights experiences the pain of burning muscles, but it's the burn that drives him to raise the bar of resistance, to push toward specific objectives. Similarly, our primary objective must be to build character and to re-position our pain for purpose rather than allowing it to defeat us.
Emotional hardships and uncertain times--economic recessions, for example--provide opportunities for us to reassess our priorities, especially when life comes to a standstill. What is so amazing is that it is at this point that our innate, creative gifts come to the surface. Sometimes by admitting to yourself that you are unable to do it alone and ask God for guidance, you allow the reservoir of God's resources to flow through you to create lasting change for yourself and a greater good for humanity.
The Mayans got it right. Their 2012 predictions, despite the misinterpretations that they foreshadowed the end of the world, were not far from the truth. Perhaps their message was intended to signify a planet broken by the end of an era, to begin an era of spiritual awakening. Or perhaps, it was a revelation reminder of what we have been entrusted. If Earth reflects man's state-of-mind, then we must first take courage to face ourselves. Only then will we give the Earth and ourselves permission to flourish.
