Originally published as How to Camp Out, John Gould, a Civil War veteran, was ahead of his time, writing one of the first books ever published on camping. This book has been a favorite read of historians, Civil War reenactors, and people simply curious about the way things used to be. Everything is covered from traveling afoot, large parties afoot, clothing, cooking, marching, setting camp, shelter, keeping a diary, and more. John Mead Gould (1839-1930) served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He rose to become the Major of the 29th Maine Regiment in 1864. In addition to How to Camp Out, Gould authored The History of the First, Tenth and Twenty Ninth Maine Regiment.
