Synopsis

It's normally good practice to steer clear of people who are nuts. But not in this case. The story of Ohio State University's beloved mascot, Brutus Buckeye, is the lively and first-ever-told account of Brutus' life, from his birth in 1965 on a sorority house lawn as a gigantic, papier-m[ch head, to who he is todaya less rotund and more sophisticated fabric version of his many former selves. Brutus shares the inside tales of his parents, his birth, his name, his many travels, and his kidnappings. We learn that he is so much more than a rambunctious, high kicking mascot, zipping around the sidelines at Ohio State University's sporting events. He is a representative for fundraising as he supports a wide array of organizations such as the Columbus Children's Hospital, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 2007, he was elected into the Mascot Hall of Fame.

From the Inside Flap

Brutus the Buckeye was born on the lawn of the Pi Beta Phi house on a crisp autumn day in 1965. Brutus s creators (his parents, ) Ray Bourhis and Sally (Huber) Lanyon, felt that Ohio State needed a mascot since the school had gone mascot-less for almost one hundred years. Their fellow students were ready for Brutus (a buckeye nut) who became an instant success after he was revealed at a home football game. This is the story of his evolution from being a gigantic, papier-mâché head, to what he is today a much smaller, fabric version of his many former selves. Told through Brutus voice are stories of his birth, how he got his name, who his parents are, his many travels, and how he is so much more than a rambunctious mascot, high kicking and zipping around the sidelines at various Ohio State sporting events. His story is how a nut grew into the hearts of Buckeye fans and became a symbol of fun, joy, and one of the most successful football programs in the nation.
