9781942586067: Stand-By One!

In 1969, Vernon Grant drew upon his ten years of Army life to create single-panel cartoons for his book, STAND-BY ONE! The topics range from preparing for and engaging in combat, sexual themes, references to the Viet Cong, and weather and terrain of Vietnam. The humor is universal, even to civilians, and will bring laughter to service people of all eras.

About the Author:

Vernon Grant of Cambridge, Massachusetts (1935-2006) was an artist and soldier in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1968. He enlisted in 1958, earning the rank of Captain, and serving in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. In 1968 he entered Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. As he studied to earn his B.A. degree in Asian Studies, Vernon used his pen and his lighthearted, dry sense of humor to create numerous jokes and a graphic novel that poked fun at every aspect of Army life. His artistic works and writings produced while living in Japan include A Grant Time In Japan for Mainichi Daily News 1969, Grant's Heroes and Grant's Grunts for Pacific Stars and Stripes, 1969, Action Line cartoons for Mainichi Daily News, 1969-1973, STAND-BY ONE! 1969, Point-Man Palmer and His Girlfriend, Invisible Peppermint Vietnam 1969, Point-Man Palmer and His Girlfriend Invisible Peppermint Vietnam to Tokyo R&R 1970, A Monster is Loose! in Tokyo (Charles E. Tuttle Company 1972) and the three-part series, Lone Wolf and Cub, done for Mainichi Daily News (Nov. 1972) After Vernon Grant returned to Cambridge Massachusetts in 1973 with Betsy Reese who became his wife in 1978, he created and self-published a science fiction series called The Love Rangers, volumes one through seven, between 1977 and 1988. He also created a newsletter, Ranger Readout, and drew Computer Cartoons Postcards in 1987 and 1988. In 2014, Betsy Grant published Adventures of Point-Man Palmer in Vietnam which includes Vernon's biography, cartoons from the Pacific Stars and Stripes, all of Point-Man Palmer and His Girlfriend Invisible Peppermint Vietnam 1969, some jokes from STAND-BY ONE!, cartoons from his officer training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and miscellaneous single panel cartoons. Several requests for copies of STAND-BY ONE! led Betsy to decide to reprint the entire STAND-BY ONE! book highlighting the humor of the Vietnam era. The Comic Art of War by Christina M. Knopf published in July 2015 includes numerous entries about Vernon Grant and some of the jokes of STAND-BY ONE!

Review:

If you liked Beetle Bailey, then you'll LOVE STAND-BY ONE! As an artist, Vernon Grant is the best-kept secret of the comic industry. Combining his keen wit and an artful pen, Grant has created a masterful comic that captures the spirit of the front-line soldier in Vietnam. After reading STAND-BY ONE! I am convinced that Vernon Grant could have been the next Bill Maudlin. --Mike Guardia, U.S. Army Veteran, author of Hal Moore: A Soldier Once... and Always and The Fires of Babylon

I had the honor of meeting Vernon and Betsy Grant years ago. Vernon was a man of great humility with an extraordinary talent for creating great cartoons that are very poignant and humorous. Having served overseas in the military I am especially fond of Vernon's military cartoons. It was very important in Vernon's works that minorities were included. Upon arriving in Vietnam during the late sixties I saw more people of color than I had in my entire life. Vernon Grant recognized this in his humor. He helped to advance camaraderie within the military's mixed racial dichotomy. We were brothers regardless of color and background. We fought a common enemy together while the Civil Rights Movement was hot. During the Vietnam Conflict to those of us who were in combat, Vernon's cartoons and Dear Abby were our favorite reading in Stars and Stripes because they momentarily moved our minds from the inhumanity of war. We most appreciated this small luxury. To quote a Vernon Grant cartoon "I am anti-war, anti-draft, anti-fight. ...Butcha might say I am proliving. So right now I am anti-Viet Cong," as they rushed off into combat. This is brilliant rationalization of surviving war yet laughing at ourselves. The romantic in me appreciates that the woman of his life, the woman who shared his good times and his pain has carried his banner and his love with her whole heart and soul. It is a love affair of our times. Vernon is smiling from the heavens. God bless you Betsy. --Henry Van Laarhoven, Corporal Marines Vietnam 1966 and 1967
