It has recently been discovered that melanin mediates the photolysis of water into gaseous hydrogen and oxygen. These two gases are used by mitochondria to generate ATP. It has also been recently discovered that melanosomes are physically connected to mitochondria. This connection is hypothesized to be purposed for human phototrophism, that is, energy from light.

This potential new form of ATP production could prove to be a potential treatment for cancer; by reducing the necessity of glucose for energy, cancer cells exhibiting the Warburg Effect could be meticulously starved.

spiritual implications are also discussed.
