9781943876358: Birds

Influenced by the exotic, lush landscapes of his childhood and youth in Hawaii and Nicaragua, Hunt Slonem paints richly colored, impressionistic visions that are celebrated worldwide―and particularly sought-after are his paintings of birds. Now for the first time, Slonem's bird paintings are collected into a single volume, published in a lavish hardcover edition, as a follow-up to the exquisite Bunnies. In Birds, the Louisiana-born artist pays homage to these remarkable creatures through hundreds of engaging works. Dramatic and vivid, Slonem's avian subjects seem unconfined to a flat surface, as the paintings brim with texture and movement. At the same time, the painter's unique “cross-hatching” technique unmistakably evokes the bars of a birdcage. The compelling nature of these paintings lies in the tension between the birds' ability to soar and their often captive state (though Slonem's own birds are often spotted flying around his studio). Sure to please bird-lovers and fine-art aficionados alike, this is an impressively luxe hardcover volume that features metallic ink and silver-gilded edges, a ribbon marker, and an acetate jacket.

Review:

"(Birds) are also the subject of a new monograph, titled Birds, that gathers together over 180 of Slonem's paintings of feathered beings in one sumptuous tome―and they adorn almost every surface of the artist's cavernous, 35,000-square-foot Brooklyn studio." (Alexxa Gotthardt Artsy)

"The avian "models" are often muses for Slonem who has released a new book of his work called BIRDS, which is filled with, you guessed it, stunning reproductions of his delightful winged paintings. " (Kelli Bender People)

Working out of his massive 35,000 square-foot Brooklyn studio... Slonem pays homage to winged creatures of all shades, shapes and sizes. (Zachary Wilson Manhattan Magazine)

"I find inspiration everywhere, but nothing sparks more ideas than travel. New concepts for my work emerge every time I go away. These new experiences influence my perspective on everything from color and technique to subject matter and scale." - Hunt Slonem (David Foxley Architectural Digest)

Hunt Slonem's big book of birds, Birds. (New York Magazine)

Dramatic and vivid, Slonem's avian subjects seem unconfined to a flat surface, brimming as they are with texture and movement. The compelling nature of these paintings lies in the tension between the birds' ability to soar and their often captive state (though Slonem's own birds are often spotted flying around his studio). (Emily Lewis Mrs. Mommy Booknerd)

His painting is dependent on surrounding himself with the things he loves, both as creative inspiration and spiritual nourishment...His latest tome, Birds, celebrates his passion for and prolific paintings of his feathered subjects. (Stacey Bewkes Quintessence)

Hunt Slonem's new book of mesmerizing avian paintings is a testimony to a life spent drawing and cherishing birds. (Meghan Bartels Audubon)
