Synopsis

The memoir Dying To Be Skinny: My Journey Through ED Recovery tells the story of Carmen Hamstra, a then 15 year old girl struggling with the eating disorder Anorexia Nervosa. Starting as a small, unnoticeable change in habits, Carmen’s struggles quickly spiral out of control. She increasingly restricts her food intake and exercises to the point of exhaustion, leading to serious medical complications. After numerous health scares, it became clear that more drastic measures would be needed to save her life.
Carmen details her treatment journey including a stay in a residential facility, through real and unedited journal entries with reflections, impact statements from family members, things she wishes she had known, and things she wishes others knew about people who struggle with eating disorders. Through sharing her story, she hopes to inspire others to speak up about their experiences, and help people recognize that asking for help is often the best thing you can do for yourself.

Carmen Hamstra is an eating disorder survivor and mental health advocate from Neenah, Wisconsin, where she lives with her Dad, Jack, and brother, John. When she is not working or attending classes, you can often find her laughing with her friends, reading a thrilling novel, or enjoying all four seasons of Wisconsin weather.
A first-time author, Carmen hopes that her story can be a ray of hope for those who can relate, reminding us that there is always more light than what we see.
