Synopsis
THE HOUSE OF SPIRITS ("La Casa Ispirata") published in 1925 by Italy’s Alberto Savinio, and here translated into English for the first time by Shawn Garrett, is a strange, metaphysical and psychological novel, centered on the “character” of Savinio who rents a room in a typical bourgeois home in 1910 Paris, and his observations of the varied characters and “types” who live there. We observe along with him the dysfunctional relationships of the family and friends, while also experiencing his “metaphysically informed” view of the city and its “spirits” – before a wrenching historical event upends everything. A strange, proto-surrealistic take on Parisian life before Europe changed forever, while perhaps presenting some commentary on the strands of history and psychology that led there, THE HOUSE OF SPIRITS is a challenging and intriguing work.
