The Anglican scholars Rev. George Herbert Palmer (1846-1926) and Francis Henry Burgess (1879-1948) developed these settings of Gregorian Chant with English texts on the authentic melodies, published as The Plainchant Gradual in two volumes: parts I and II; and parts III and IV.
This volume (parts I and II) presents the Proper antiphons for the particular Sundays and major feasts of the church year: the Introit (entrance chant), the Gradual psalm and Alleluia (both sung between the readings), the Offertory (during the procession of the gifts), and the Communion chant.
This second edition of this volume was originally published in 1965 by the Community of St. Mary the Virgin in Wantage; their cooperation has made this reprint edition possible.
