Synopsis

My brother and I began writing this book in the winter of 2021 with the intention of distributing it to the members of our family. We wanted them to know about our father and all the successes, trials and tribulation he had experienced. I have always thought it important that they know about and understand their heritage.
As we were deep into our research, we began to realize that our father's life story was one which symbolized the travails and triumphs of a generation during years of dramatic change in the United States. A child of poor immigrant parents, he endured ethnic prejudice. As a baby, he lost his mother. His high school years, where he distinguished himself as an elite athlete, took place during the Great Depression. His dreams and his career were put on hold while he served as a Marine Corps officer in the Pacific during World War II. We have tried to describe the unimaginable horrors he experienced there which troubled him for the rest of his life.
We thought that his story would be of interest to the people in our hometown and possibly other Americans. This book is not an attempt to glorify our father as an athlete, coach, and war hero. Rather, we have attempted to show that despite his many accomplishments, he, like many of his contemporaries, was ultimately broken by the tragedies of the twentieth century and the horrors of war.
