To “regain mental acuity” after a stroke, Sister Kathleen Cogan decided simply to write a short story about her life. Over time, that short story transformed into a remarkable, heart-warming memoir of three sisters from a ranch near Buena Vista, Colorado, and their lives and work as Benedictine Sisters. Growing up on the ranch shaped their lives, instilling a deep love of family, love of nature, and love of God. In Three Nuns from the Ranch, each sister shares inspiring memories of a happy childhood and recounts her significant and committed work in various Benedictine missions. The running current to each reminiscence—even the unexpected and entertaining adventures—is a profound recognition of the grace and wonder that surround them, from unforeseen guardian angels to the beauty of a mountain vista. To read their story is to live gratitude and joy.

Sister Kathleen was born in Salida, Colorado, in 1929. She feels fortunate to come from a family of three boys and four girls who worked side by side with their parents on a ranch in the Arkansas Valley homesteaded by her dad and uncle.
Sister Kathleen attended grade and high school in Buena Vista, Colorado. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, where she joined the Benedictine Sisters in June 1949. She received her M.S. in Biology at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, and a B.S. in Nursing at the University Hospital program in Denver, Colorado. Sister Kathleen taught school for about thirty years in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, and in Colorado schools. After becoming a nurse, she worked at Penrose Hospital in the nursery and intensive care nursery. Sister Kathleen was in charge of the infirmary at Benet Hill Monastery while also teaching part time at Benet Hill Academy. She later returned to nursing at Penrose Hospital for a number of years.
Sister Kathleen now enjoys her retirement at the Benet Hill Monastery in Colorado Springs where she continues to appreciate her prayer life, serve her community, and find peace in the beauty of the surrounding Black Forest and Pikes Peak in the distance.
