America is being torn apart by the rise of new sources of news that have no respect for facts or democracy. Coupled with politicians who cast honest journalists as frauds and enemies of the public, they are eroding the informational common ground and poisoning the process of reaching consensus that democracy requires. Public trust in professional journalism has fallen to the lowest point since polls began to measure confidence in the news. That makes us prey for unscrupulous media actors who whip up resentment and hatred of fellow Americans with false and distorted news reports. Because each group now has its own set of “facts,” disputes cannot be resolved logically. We are becoming a nation of warring tribes, even to the point where we no longer wish to associate with each other. About the Author

John H. McManus is a former journalist, journalism professor and news critic. He researches, writes and speaks about the intersection of journalism, technology and democracy. His work has been published in many academic and trade journals and his books have twice won the annual research award from the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2000, he created GradetheNews.org, a website that did for news in the San Francisco Bay Area what Consumer Reports Magazine does for cars and computers. Grade the News randomly sampled the most popular Bay Area newspapers and local newscasts and rated them on seven yardsticks of journalism quality. The project was funded by the Gerbode, Ford and Knight foundations and won both regional and national awards. He earned his B.A. at Holy Cross, his M.A. in journalism at the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. at Stanford.
