A walk through hidden Galicia on the trail of saints and scholars. The only book on the Variante Espiritual includes both historical and practical information on the route, with places to stay, and contact no's. In August 2016 I walked north from Porto on the Camino Portuguese, to Santiago de Compostela. The route that made the deepest impression came just after Pontevedra: The Spiritual Variant, or Stone and Water route, which was added to the Camino itinerary in 2013.Its meditative paths led me through a region of lavish fertility; of vineyards and green pastures; of forested hillsides, remote glens and living waters. By following it, I discovered a place of history, myth and Celtic resonance with Ireland.I offer these words from a desire to share something of its wonder and so that you, too, might be tempted to walk its paths. One year later I returned to walk and explore more of the O Salnes region. An additional chapter brings the story up to date.

Roy Uprichard was born in Belfast and, as a mature student graduated from Queen's University with a BA Hons in Politics and Sociology and an MSSc in Irish Political Studies. Then, for the next twenty-four years, he lectured in Further Education, working with young adults with learning difficulties. In 2010, in a partially successful assault on the middle-age spread, he trekked part of the Annapurna circuit in Nepal. In the summer of 2012, he discovered the Camino Frances. That autumn he walked the Camino Portuguese from Tui and, on his retirement in 2014, returned to walk the entire Camino Frances, recorded in his travel memoir, Restless Hearts. He has since walked St Cuthbert's Way in Northumbria and, in August 2016, the Camino Portuguese from Porto taking the extraordinary Spiritual Variant option, the Stone and Water route through hidden Galicia. He lives in North Down with his wife and hopes to continue walking and writing. In the interests of privacy, he has changed the names and nationalities of most pilgrims met during the summer of 2016.
