Synopsis
En 1789, Paris comptait moins de 600 000 habitants. A partir de la Restauration, sa population bondit sous l'effet des migrations très fortes : elle double en cinquante ans, quadruple en un siècle. Déjà centre politique et culturel, la capitale devient aussi le principal centre économique et financier : sa puissance inquiète, sa richesse fait envie. Effrayés par la grande métropole, les régimes successifs lui ont tous refusé l'autonomie et l'ont quasi administrée directement. Les monarchies du XIXe siècle ont essayé d'aménager la capitale. La Troisième République, appuyée sur des notables ruraux, l'a négligée. A partir du régime de vichy, Paris semble être devenu le bouc émissaire de l'aménagement. Derrière les critiques mal fondées et les politiques antiparisiennes, on devine toute une doctrine anti urbaine, apparue avec les fascismes des années 1930, qui s'oppose encore aujourd'hui à la grande ville.
