Synopsis
Nous sommes en Turquie, en 1876. L'Empire ottoman, autrefois craint et fantasmé, rend son dernier soupir. Dans ce pays qui se délite, Loti, jeune officier de marine, s'éprend d'Aziyadé, belle Circassienne enfermée dans le harem d'un vieil homme. Amoureux de la terre turque comme des yeux verts de son amante, le héros - personnage à peine fictif derrière lequel se devine aisément l'auteur - erre dans les rues de Constantinople, aborde Salonique, observe la Lune et assiste à la fête du Baïram. Entre volupté et mélancolie, Loti et Aziyadé s'aiment et se séparent, dans l'ombre d'un Orient sur le point de disparaître. À la fois journal intime, récit épistolaire et carnet de voyage, ce premier roman - suivi de Fantôme d'Orient, où les héros se retrouvent dix ans plus tard - dresse pour toujours le portrait de Pierre Loti : écrivain amoureux du rêve, du large et des terres inconnues.
