Synopsis
Dans ce vingtième et ultime tome des Rougon-Macquart, Zola nous ramène à Plassans, leur berceau provençal. Le docteur Pascal Rougon s'y consacre à des recherches sur l'hérédité, se fondant pour cela sur sa propre famille, dont les membres, aux destins divers, lui fournissent un précieux matériau. Certaines de ses découvertes dérangent : sa mère, qui craint de voir la réputation familiale s'écrouler, veut détruire ses documents. Elle reçoit d'abord l'aide de Clotilde, nièce de Pascal, mais cette dernière épouse peu à peu les idées de son oncle. Une histoire d'amour complexe, mais libératrice, débute alors, oscillant entre interdits et double initiation, charnelle comme spirituelle... Pour Zola, ce roman, véritable "appel à la vie", est "le résumé et la conclusion" de toute son oeuvre. Les thèmes déjà présents dans les livres précédents s'y déploient : raison scientifique contre foi aveugle, éternel retour des tares ou, à l'inverse, possible échappée grâce à la connaissance. Mais ce qui fait du Docteur Pascal un ouvrage si singulier est l'éblouissant message d'espoir qu'il contient : la croyance profonde de son auteur en notre humanité.
