La tourmente communiste lui fait perdre tous ceux qu'elle aime : son père, sa mère, sa sour, et le bébé qu'elle a eu de Boris dont elle ne sait plus rien. Désespérée et à bout de ressources, elle échoue à Paris. Un groupe de compatriotes exilés lui font découvrir le cinéma, alors balbutiant. Elle devient star. Elle vit une histoire d'amour avec un comte partisan des Blancs qui est assassiné peu après le moment où Nastassia avait accepté un contrat fabuleux à Hollywood. Elle y part donc seule et construit sa carrière à sa manière, devenant même sa propre productrice. Elle épouse un riche banquier, mais cette union ne sera pas heureuse. Elle rencontre un bootlegger irlandais qui fera fortune au Mexique et y construira une ville utopique. Ruiné par la crise de 1929, son mari se suicide. Nastassia vit secrètement avec cet aventurier milliardaire, partageant son temps entre le Mexique et Hollywood. La guerre met fin à cette liaison, son amant est tué au Mexique en 1945. Seule et meurtrie, elle part pour l'URSS pour tenter de récupérer son fils de 18 ans, Michaîl, qui désire passer à l'Est. Elle y retrouve Boris, son amour d'enfance, avec qui elle décide de rester. Mais ils sont bannis d'URSS. Micha'l se suicide. Ils ne sont pas bienvenus aux Etats-Unis et se retrouvent en France. L'ancienne star, complètement ruinée, y vit avec Boris. Elle publie un livre qui devient un best-seller, lui rendant aisance et célébrité. En 1953, au Festival de Venise, sa fille Sophie divorce alors que son mari reçoit le Lion d'Or pour l'adaptation à l'écran du best-sellers écrit par Nastassia. Quelques heures après avoir manifesté son intention de divorcer à son mari, Sophie rencontre un violoniste russe passé à l'Ouest qui deviendra l'homme de sa vie et le père de deux de ses enfants. Le fils qu'elle eut de son premier mari est un Vétéran désabusé de la guerre du Vietnam. A Atlanta, sur un coup de sang, il tue un chauffeur de taxi et est condamné à une lourde peine.
