Barcelone, années 1920. David Martin, dix-sept ans, travaille au journal La Voz de la Industria . Son existence bascule un soir de crise au journal : il faut trouver de toute urgence un remplaçant au feuilletoniste dominical. Sur les conseils de Pedro Vidal, chroniqueur à ses heures, David est choisi. Son feuilleton rencontre un immense succès et, pour la première fois, David est payé pour ce qu'il aime le plus au monde : écrire.
En plein succès, David accepte l'offre de deux éditeurs peu scrupuleux : produire à un rythme effréné des feuilletons sous pseudonyme. Mais après quelques années, à bout de force, David va renoncer. Ses éditeurs lui accordent alors neuf mois pour écrire son propre roman. Celui-ci, boudé par la critique et sabordé par les éditeurs, est un échec. David est d'autant plus désespéré que la jeune fille dont il est amoureux depuis toujours - et à laquelle le livre est secrètement dédié - va épouser Pedro Vidal.
Son ami libraire, Sempere, choisit ce moment pour l'emmener au Cimetière des livres oubliés, où David dépose le sien. Puis arrive une offre extraordinaire : un éditeur parisien, Corelli, lui propose, moyennant cent mille francs, une fortune, de créer une texte fondateur, sorte de nouvelle Bible, " une histoire pour laquelle les hommes seraient capables de vivre et de mourir, de tuer et d'être tués, d'offrir leur âme ".
Du jour où il accepte ce contrat, une étrange mécanique du meurtre se met en place autour de David. En vendant sa liberté d'écrivain, aurait-il vendu son âme au diable ? Épouvanté et fasciné, David se lance dans une enquête sur ce curieux éditeur, dont les pouvoirs semblent transcender le temps et l'espace.
