Au moment où il quitte la scène, Alceste quitte également le monde auquel il s'est heurté, et le vrai sujet de la comédie est bien la confrontation du misanthrope et de ce milieu mondain qu'il récuse : par philosophie, certainement, mais également par cet esprit chagrin d'atrabilaire qui en fait l'ennemi de toute sociabilité, comme le montre la manière incongrue et bourrue dont il témoigne à Célimène un amour qui prend à rebours les règles de la galanterie.
Cet extravagant est donc certainement ridicule. Mais comment lui reprocher, néanmoins, l'intransigeante pratique des vertus de sincérité, de justice et de droiture ? Parce que Alceste dénonce le monde, c'est bien lui qui permet à Molière, en 1666, de nous en donner une image véritable - jusque dans ses contradictions.
