Synopsis
La poétesse connue sous le nom Marie de France est, vers la fin du XIIe siècle, le premier grand auteur féminin de la littérature française. Ses Lais sont des récits d'aventure et d'amour dont la matière est tirée du folklore et des mythes bretons. Ce sont des contes de fées: un chevalier se transforme en loup-garou, un autre en oiseau pour voler jusqu'à celle qu'il aime, un autre rencontre une biche qui parle, un autre encore devient l'amant d'une fée. Ce sont aussi des contes poétiques, à la simplicité mystérieuse et envoûtante, qui disent la force et la mélancolie de l'amour.

About the Author
Philippe Walter is a professor of medieval French literature at the University of Grenoble III. He has published numerous books on the Middle Ages and oversaw the editing and translation of the Grail romances for the prestigious Bibliotheque de la Pleiade (Gallimard). He lives in France.
