Synopsis
« ...Un homme nommé Claude Gueux, pauvre ouvrier, vivait à Paris en 1831. Il avait avec lui une fille qui était sa maîtresse et un enfant de cette fille... Il était capable, habile, intelligent, fort mal traité par l'éducation, fort bien traité par la nature, ne sachant pas lire mais sachant penser. Un hiver, l'ouvrage manqua. L'homme, la fille et l'enfant eurent froid et faim. L'homme vola. Il en résulta trois jours de pain et de feu pour la femme et pour l'enfant et cinq ans de prison pour l'homme. Il fut envoyé faire son temps à la Maison Centrale de Clairvaux. On va voir ce que la Société en a fait. »
Relation allégorique d'un drame individuel, cet ardent plaidoyer contre la peine de mort et contre la prison met à nu le mécanisme de la brutalité sociale qui ne sait répondre à la détresse que par la répression. Avec Claude Gueux, Victor Hugo n'est plus simplement romancier ou poète. Il conquiert une place éminente auprès des plus grands orateurs de la Liberté.
