Pourtant, cet avenir radieux a son envers. Seuls quelques marginaux, méprisés, bientôt vaincus par la misère et la faim, persistent dans le culte de l’Art et de la Poésie, tandis qu’un état omniprésent organise la distribution du savoir scientifique…
Composé avant les « Voyages extraordinaires », refusé par l’éditeur Hetzel, ce roman aura attendu cent trente ans avant de revoir le jour. Surprenant par la pertinence de son information scientifique, il vaut aussi et surtout par l’acuité de son analyse des intrications de l’économie, de la technique et de la politique. Une vision ambiguë qui fait justice de l’image d’un Jules Verne chantre béat du Progrès. Et d’abord un roman prenant, coloré, où le grandiose se teinte volontiers d’un humour des plus sombres…
