Ces stations sont liées par plusieurs chercheurs mais aussi par les singes étudiés : les premiers primatologues de Makokou, notamment Annie Gautier-Hion (1940-2011) dès 1964, sont aussi les instigateurs de l'implantation de la discipline en Bretagne en y transférant en 1969 un élevage de cercopithécinés forestiers. À partir de documents d'archives, l'auteur questionne le développement des deux stations en prenant en compte leurs contextes naturels, scientifiques, politiques et sociologiques ainsi que leur évolution. Nombre de problèmes soulevés par cette étude de cas justifient qu'on envisage celle-ci à l'échelle de l'histoire de la primatologie. Elle confirme en particulier que « la station », en tant que lieu hybride d'investigation, est productrice de compromis entre méthodologie de terrain et méthodologie de laboratoire pour l'étude du comportement animal.
