Synopsis
C'est Seabourne, petite ville ctire l'atmosphre trique, que vgte Joan Ogden, en compagnie de sa jeune sur Milly et de leurs parents, le colonel et Mrs. Ogden. Il lui est impossible de fuir, d'chapper son pre, vieillard tyrannique et mesquin, et plus encore une mre possessive l'extrme. Jusqu' ce qu'Elizabeth apparaisse dans sa vie: d'abord en tant que gouvernante, puis comme une amie passionne, qui voudrait vivre avec Joan son mancipation. Mais Mrs. Ogden garde prise sur sa fille, au prix d'un chantage affectif permanent, luttant contre ses rves et ses dsirs. Sous influences dpeint avec profondeur le destin d'une jeune femme sensible dvore par l'gosme tranquille de son entourage. Il faut redcouvrir ce beau livre respirant la vrit psychologique. Deuxime roman publi par Radclyffe Hall (1880-1943), c'est en ralit le premier ouvrage qu'elle crivit, dont les thmes annoncent avec force Le Puits de solitude.
