Dès le XIIe siècle, églises et maisons particulières s'ornaient des formules chères à l'art roman. Devenue ville royale au début du XIVe siècle, Figeac édifiait alors sa fortune sur le commerce des draps et des produits précieux tandis que l'architecture adoptait le décor gothique venu du nord. Remaniée à l'époque classique, Figeac a pourtant conservé à travers les âges son aspect médiéval de place marchande et peut être considérée aujourd'hui comme un exemple exceptionnel de l'architecture en France.
