"I madly love these arabesques of dimmed nuances. This teeming mass of tangled lines which are flowers, fabrics and landscapes. I love these "princesses" with gem-like eyes and sinuous lips. They close upon bad secrets. An impure ferment seems to swell their gorged flesh with the magnolia flower s soft white tint, whilst their baroque opulence shows in each novel jewel which ornaments their nervous fingers." Georges de Feure must be the exemplary "universal artist" of the late 19th-century. His talent is manifold: he was not only a symbolist painter and illustrator, but also a poster-artist. And he played an important role as artist-decorator in the Pavilion of Art Nouveau, in the 1900 universal exhibition.
